Welcome to my Website! At Nature and Needs, you will find resources and support for your students with learning differences. My name is Dr. Irene Van Riper, and I can enrich your youngster’s strengths while we address their needs. I specialize in working with individuals with Dyslexia, Executive Functioning Deficits and Asperger Syndrome.
The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective instruction.
Intervention for reading differences such as dyslexia, should begin as soon as possible to teach students to pave new neural pathways for fluency and comprehension. Orton Gillingham instruction addresses neurobiological deficits with explicit, systematic, diagnostic and multi-sensory instruction. It is the “gold standard” of intervention. Instruction is tailored to each individual, in a safe and comfortable environment.
